Custom Word Mold: 3D Text for Your Baking

Sep 29, 2026 · 9 min read

What is a Word Mold?

Short answer: a Word Mold is a 3D piece that carries a word or a short phrase in relief. You type the text in the kingscutter.com Designer, choose the letter height and download an STL file ready to print. The piece is pressed onto dough, fondant or chocolate and leaves the word marked.

The difference from a decorative stamp is the content. A decorative stamp prints a figure; the Word Mold prints legible text: names, dates, greeting phrases and full messages.

How a text becomes a mold, step by step

  1. Open the Designer and pick Word Mold in the product selector.
  2. Type the text in the word field. The factory value is KingsCutter, so replace it with yours.
  3. Adjust the letter height and the letter spacing.
  4. Turn the bridges between letters on or off depending on how you will use it.
  5. Download the STL and send it to your printer.

What are the bridges between letters and why are they necessary?

Short answer: bridges are 3 mm crossbars that join the letters to each other so the word comes out as 1 single piece instead of loose letters. They are enabled by default in the Designer.

Without bridges, a letter with an inner hole —the O, the A, the P or the R— splits into 2 bodies and the mold falls apart when you demold it. The bridge closes that hole at one point and keeps the letter attached to the rest of the text.

The bridge width is adjusted in millimeters. A wider bridge withstands more pressure, but it interrupts the letter stroke more; 3 mm is the balance the Designer ships with.

Word Mold measurements and data

DataReal value
Letter heightAdjustable; 20 mm by default
Letter spacing2 mm by default
Bridges between lettersEnabled; 3 mm wide
Mold body4.5 mm thick
Text relief4 mm by default, up to 6 mm
Engrave modeUp to 2.5 mm deep
Outline smoothing8 mm
Default fontPoppins Bold
Output1 STL file

Every value comes from the real Designer settings, not from an estimate. The size is set by the cap height: if you choose 20 mm, every capital letter stands 20 mm tall. In the physical catalogue at Stay Humble 3D the cutter sizes run from 7 cm to 20 cm.

How do you use a custom text mold?

The mold is pressed onto soft materials and leaves the word marked. These are the 6 uses we see most often in the workshop:

  • Cookie dough: mark the name before baking and the text stays in relief on the finished cookie.
  • Fondant: leaves the word clean because fondant takes pressure without cracking.
  • Chocolate: press the plate onto tempered chocolate and the text comes out defined.
  • Polymer clay: works for keychains and jewellery pieces with names.
  • Foam: the material springs back and the text stays legible anyway.
  • Salt dough: the cheapest option to practise before working with real dough.

How do you print and wash the mold?

Short answer: print it in PETG with a 0.2 mm layer, 3 walls and 15% infill, and wash it by hand with warm water and mild soap. That combination keeps the relief firm and the body slightly flexible.

PETG is a plastic suitable for food contact. The FDA lists PETG among the copolymers authorised for food-contact articles in Title 21 of the CFR, section 177.1315. In Europe, the body that evaluates those materials is the EFSA.

3D printing leaves micro-grooves on the surface and those channels hold onto product residue. That is why hand washing is the routine that keeps the mold clean for longer.

How does it differ from the decorative stamp and the Imprint Cutter?

The Word Mold works with text; the other 2 products work with drawings. The decorative stamp prints a figure on the cookie and the Imprint Cutter engraves a drawing without cutting the dough. A text mold and a cutter complete each other: you can cut the cookie with a silhouette and then mark the name on it.

What is a word mold for in a business?

Short answer: it lets you personalise by name without ordering a new piece every time. You type another text, download the STL again and reuse the same printer. According to Research and Markets, the global cookie market grows from USD 30.6 billion in 2025 to USD 40.6 billion in 2032. The projected annual growth is 4.1%.

The 3 commercial uses we see most

  • Birthday table: the guest of honour's name marked on every cookie in the order.
  • Wedding or baby shower favour: a short phrase and the event date.
  • Own brand: the business name on the products in the display case.

Sources and standards

The technical data in this guide rests on verifiable official sources:

  • 21 CFR 177.1315 — PETG copolymers for food contact (eCFR).
  • Food contact materials (EFSA).
  • Packaging and food contact (FDA).
  • AM-Bench — additive manufacturing benchmarks (NIST).
  • Cookie cutter — definition and measurements (Wikipedia).

Preguntas frecuentes

What is a Word Mold from kingscutter.com?

It is a 3D piece carrying a word or short phrase in relief. You type the text in the Designer, choose the letter height and download the STL ready to print.

What happens if I turn off the bridges between letters?

Letters with an inner hole, such as the O or the R, split into 2 bodies and the mold falls apart when you demold it. Bridges are enabled by default, 3 mm wide.

Which letter height suits a cookie?

The factory height is 20 mm. On a 7 cm cookie a 20 mm text covers most of the surface, so for long names it is better to drop it to 12 or 15 mm.

Can I use the mold with chocolate?

Yes. Press the plate onto tempered chocolate and the text comes out defined. It also works on fondant, cookie dough, polymer clay, foam and salt dough.

Which material should I print the mold in?

PETG, the plastic suitable for food contact. Print it with a 0.2 mm layer, 3 walls and 15% infill, and wash it by hand with warm water and mild soap.

Can I reuse the same mold with another name?

Yes. Change the text in the Designer, generate again and download a new STL. The printer and the material stay the same, so the piece is reused on every order.
